John Nicholas Gray (født 17. april 1948) er en britisk politisk filosof og forfatter med interesse for analytisk filosofi og idéhistorie.

Biografi

Gray har skrevet flere innflytelsesrike bøker, inkludert False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism (1998), som argumenterer for at fri markedsglobalisering er et ustabilt opplysningsprosjekt som for tiden er i ferd med å gå i oppløsning; Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals (2002), som angriper filosofisk humanisme, et verdensbilde som Gray hevder har sin opprinnelse i religion; og Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia (2007), en kritikk av utopisk tenkning i den moderne verden.

Gray ser på vilje, og derav moral, som en illusjon, og fremstiller menneskeheten som en elendig art som driver med å utslette andre former for liv. Gray har skrevet at "mennesker... kan ikke ødelegge jorden, men de kan lett ødelegge miljøet som opprettholder dem."

Han trakk seg i 2008 som School Professor of European Thought ved London School of Economics. Gray bidrar regelmessig til The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement og New Statesman, hvor han er den ledende bokanmelderen.

Gray er ateist.
